333 Shell Orientation is specific to Maple shells only. Alterations in grain direction greatly influence sound. In VLT shells, the outermost and innermost plies run vertically, rather than in the traditional horizontal configuration. The vertical grain reduces tension on a shell, allowing it to vibrate more freely for lower fundamental pitch. From VLT, the 333 was born.
